The Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) - frequently referred to as the "Remain in Mexico" policy - is a US policy that requires asylum seekers arriving at legal ports of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border to be returned to Mexico to wait for the duration of their U.S. immigration proceedings. First announced in December 2018 and implemented January 2019, <0.1% of asylum seekers have been accepted under MPP, effectively ending the international legal right to seek asylum in the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security claims that MPP is a “humanitarian approach” which aims to “restore a safe and orderly immigration process.” However, the reality here on the ground is the exact opposite of what the protocol claims to do. MPP makes no one safer, and in fact puts the most vulnerable populations at risk of exploitation, rape, murder, and kidnapping as people are forced to live in gang-run border lands. It is a cruel and misguided policy which forces people to live in squalid, makeshift encampments.
The asylum seekers in the Matamoros camp have written ~ 600 postcards to Jill Biden in the hopes that if Joe Biden is elected president, she will take direct action against MPP as her first lady’s initiative. Dr. Jill Biden visited the Matamoros camp in December 2019; "It's not who we are as Americans" she said in response to witnessing MPP firsthand.
We are asking everyday American citizens and organizations to write postcards in solidarity with the migrants, stating the clear message to end MPP. Postcards will be collected by our organization and delivered to elected officials from around the country with the end goal of POLICY CHANGE!
On August 27, 2019, 22 senators signed a letter denouncing MPP. This project will keep them accountable for their 2019 response by reminding our senators that we as Americans will no longer sit and watch our fellow humans be denied their basic right to seek asylum.
